When useful information lives across many applications, finding context and coordinating the resulting work are related but separate buying decisions. Compare Onyx and Tale against both parts of the job before choosing your team's workspace.
Compare at a glance
| Criterion | Tale | Onyx |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Owned project tasks with briefs, files, discussions and reviewed outputs. | A company context layer with permission-aware indexing across applications. |
| Agent work | Agents prepare reports, documents or software in persistent workspaces. | Custom agents, deep research, MCP actions and sandbox execution producing artifacts. |
| Pilot focus | Test ownership and handoff from source material to an accepted project result. | Test source retrieval and permission handling alongside execution and handoff. |
Context and execution both matter
Onyx describes itself as a context layer across company applications. Its repository documents permission-aware indexing, custom agents, deep research, external actions through MCP, and sandbox execution that produces artifacts. It also supports self-hosting. Treating it as search alone would miss much of the product. Read the Onyx overview.
Tale starts project work with a brief, an assigned person or agent, and a visible task. Related files and discussions stay with the project. Agents can work on reports, documentation, or software in persistent workspaces, while teammates steer the task and examine deliverables. This makes Tale worth evaluating when the difficult part is coordinating the work after relevant information has been found. See tasks and review.
Test a policy update with conflicting sources
Give each trial an old policy, a newer approved decision, and a set of employee questions. Ask for a proposed update and a list of unresolved conflicts. Keep permissions and model access comparable where possible.
Then pass the work to a colleague who did not write the prompt. Can they trace a claim to its source, see which document should prevail, and request a targeted revision? Test both retrieval quality and the handoff. A good answer and a manageable team process are different outcomes; record each separately.
Decide what you need to standardize
Consider Onyx when indexing and accessing company context is the foundation of the rollout. Consider Tale when you want teams to organize agent work as owned project tasks with reviewable outputs. Both deserve a practical test if your requirements span retrieval and execution; the choice need not rest on an artificial search-versus-agent distinction.
